What is Aikido?

Aikido is a modern martial art of Japanese origin (1942), though its roots go back many centuries. It is based on a number of the old jutsu systems. Its roots are based in Daito-ryu aikijujitsu. The founder, Morihei Ueshiba, also studied a number of sword and spear systems and incorporated them into his art.

Aikido uses the attackers force, which is redirected and used against them. This ends in the attacker either been thrown or pinned to the ground.

It has 9 basic techniques plus many more techniques that are more advanced.

We practise hand to hand techniques (body arts), wooden weapons (jo, bokken and tanto) and iaido.

Aikido is an excellent vehicle for developing self awareness and control.
